Shershaah Movie Review

Shershaah Movie Review: Sidharth Malhotra plays Captain Vikram Batra of the Param Vir Chakra in Shershaah. On August 12, the film, which also stars Kiara Advani in the major role, will be available on Amazon Prime Video. Can Shershaah be the Uri of Sidharth Malhotra?

Lt Vikram Batra makes a pledge to Dimple just before boarding the bus from Chandigarh. He’ll come home and live with ‘Mrs Batra’ for the next 40 years. It’s at this very instant that your heart breaks into a million pieces. It’s possible that the shelling at LOC was louder.

Shershaah Movie

You already know Vikram isn’t going to keep his word. The girl in front of you, her eyes a touch watery, taking in the words of her lover’s pledge, has no idea. In that moment between Dimple and Vikram someplace on that bus stop before he heads off to war, the sacrifice that goes behind an Army officer’s sacrifice comes alive.

Batra makes his own decisions. When news of India and Pakistan going to war breaks, Vikram is on leave. Batra becomes agitated when the famous speech of then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is broadcast on television.

He knows he belongs in the blinding-brown slopes of Kargil, not the lush valleys of Palampur. Lieutenant Batra thus abandons his family, friends, and Dimple. He says, “Ya toh Tiranga lehrake aaunga, ya toh Tiranga mein lipat ke aaunga,Lekin aaunga zaroor!” a quote from Captain Vikram Batra’s legend.

For those who haven’t read about Vikram Batra, all of this may seem a little too “filmi.” Vishnu Varadhan, a newbie director, takes on the task head on and produces his own version of gold. Varadhan’s storey is uncannily similar to Captain Batra’s true experience.

Shershaah Movie

If there are any, they are few and far between. We know the narrative because it was told to us by the Indian Army and Vikram’s co-soldiers. It’s a storey we’re familiar with, having seen it on the big screen (LOC Kargil, JP Dutta, 2003) and in the various news-channel tributes to the Kargil heroes on every Kargil Vijay Diwas.

For one thing, it draws Dimple out of the shadows, despite the fact that she is not photographed at the end of the film. Except for Dimple, everyone else who has a character in the film has their real-vs-reel photographs on screen before the end credits. Shershaah Movie

Team Shershaah Movie deserves credit for not digging into the lives of someone who decided to avoid the limelight. Away from Dras, that’s the narrative.

The story becomes the Indian Army’s in Kashmir, where Batra is assigned for the first time. The year is 1997, and the Valley is wracked by rebellion. In Sopore, militant camps operate directly under the noses of the Indian Army, and informers are murdered and hanged for all to see in the town square.

Shershaah Movie

The principal man in action here, Haider, tells his fighters that Kashmir needs to know that the terrorists, not the Indian Army, are in charge. He doesn’t live to see his prophecies come true, but Batra and his troop see the beginning and end of the curse.

Shershaah Movie constructs this man, this soldier behind that code name, scene by scene. He’s the kind of guy who leaps to save a friend from impending death. He accepts an assignment that he could have easily declined. And he was just 24.

All of the pop-culture references (including a Madhuri Dixit reference) come to a head when Vikram exclaims ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’ on the battlefield, which is then broadcast to the rest of the country via that famous interview.

And as Sidharth Malhotra imitates Vikram Batra in front of the camera, his companion watches from a court canteen, where a Pepsi ad is affixed to the wall. You’re well aware of where that slogan belongs. Once more, from the screen to the crowd.

Shershaah Movie

You can’t help but think about the folly of war as you see these armymen take peaks and heights and hoist the Tricolor. But, hey, what can you do? The movie is simply a retelling of the events that occurred on Point 4875 on that tragic July day in 1999. Yes, India was victorious in the war.

This combat claimed the lives of 527 of our soldiers, according to the official tally. Many locals were also enlisted as support personnel in this conflict. Their tales are still lost in the Dras mountains.

Captain Vikram Batra’s storey, told via the words of his twin brother Vishal Batra, is used by Shershaah to create a film that will be remembered for a long time. Sidharth Malhotra, the principal actor, deserves a lot of credit for that. The actor dons the uniform and assumes the role of Vikram Batra.

Shershaah Movie

Is Shershaah going to be Sidharth’s Uri? I wish the movie had been released in theatres! Kiara Advani makes an impression in her short screen time. Dimple, on the other hand, is as enigmatic as her real-life counterpart.

Shershaah owes a lot to its supporting cast, and Shiv Panditt, Nikitin Dheer, Shataf Figar, and Sahil Vaid all do an excellent job in their roles.Except for the statement – as Subedar Raghunath (Raj Arun) puts it — “Kya ho aap, Sir!” – the film doesn’t dwell too much on the workings of the Indian Army (there’s no Havan Karenge, Sandese Aate Hai, and all that). That could be said of every Army officer. If you don’t have it in you, you won’t be able to be one.

KARGIL IS IN DRAS WITH SHERSHAAH – Watch Video

The combat sequences appear to be realistic. There isn’t nearly as much of the lush Kashmir photographed in cinematographer Kamaljeet Negi’s camera as there is of the livable Himalayan peaks. Shershaah brings that horrific landscape to life. The loose rocks, the cliffs, the bunkers, everything feels real. At 2 hours and 15 minutes, Shershaah is a slick film that belongs on the big screen. The only regret then is the wistfulness of missing it in a theatre.

Dimple collapses in front of the fire as Captain Vikram Batra’s lifeless remains are brought in to Palampur and given a pistol salute. She has a crimson dupatta on. “Chup Maahi Chup Hai Ranjha / Bole Kaise Ve Na Ja…” Jasleen Royal’s voice continues to play in your thoughts, “Chup Maahi Chup Hai Ranjha / Bole Kaise Ve Na Ja…” It’s time to wipe the tears from your eyes.

Conclusion

SHERSHAAH is a brilliantly-made war saga with a fantastic performance by Sidharth Malhotra that will make your heart swell with pride and your eyes well up with tears. Must Watch…
